Snowstorm 2014: How to protect your pipes and roof

Posted: Updated:

(01/09/14) - Cold and snow are taking their toll on pipes and roofs.

Lou Blessing, owner of Blessing Heating and Cooling in Grand Blanc, says some years he hardly sees any burst pipes.  This winter, because it's been so cold, he's already dealt with hundreds.

"If you know you have a room where pipes have frozen before, turn the water on and let it trickle," Blessing says. "That's an old trick, but a good one."

Local roofers have also been busy.

"Basically all we're doing is snow removals," says Steve from Lockhart Roofing. "We have several crews going morning until dark right now."

And as the weather warms up, he expects to see even more problems.

"Once this rain comes and the snow starts freezing, it'll cause a severe amount of weight on the roof, and it'll actually cave in certain roofs," he says.
