Plow truck driver rescues child trapped in snow

FENTON (WJRT) -

(01/10/14) -  There were some scary moments, earlier this week, for a child stuck in the snow and the plow driver trying to free him.

It ended well, but serves as a good reminder that kids need to be careful playing where trucks may be plowing - especially as people continue to dig out after the record breaking snowfall we saw.

Plow truck driver Patrick Mullaly, with K&K Lawn Care in the Fenton area, walked around like he always does prior to plowing near homes Monday morning in Fenton.

"To make sure there's nobody out here," he said.

Seeing nothing, Mullaly made one pass, pushing a snow bank back into one already there.

"I started backing up and noticed a foot sticking out," he said.

So he started digging - frantically.

"Bare hands digging at first, of course, because my first reaction was to jump out to help him.  (I) couldn't get him out with my bare hands so I had to use a shovel," Mullaly said. "He was buried. He was almost (in) a handstand, basically, when I pulled him out. His face was covered."

It was a young child. A boy.

Mullaly, a father himself, was scared.

"I was freaking out," he said.

When he got the kid out, he found out, according to him and his mother, Mullaly said, the child had made a tunnel in the snow.

"He did see me coming," he said. "He explained to me he jumped in the hole."

Mullaly thinks the tunnel may have collapsed under the weight of the other snow on top of it.

The child was and is OK.
