(01/13/14) - The Greater Flint Health Coalition's Commit to Fit initiative is back for another round of making Mid-Michigan move in the New Year.
"Over the years, we now have 12,000 people participating, who have logged over 20 million minutes of physical activity. We've really been pleased with the results, and we just want to carry on with that momentum in 2014," said Tony Cuttitta, of the Greater Flint Health Coalition.
This week, the Healthy Winter Weight Loss Challenge begins. It's free to everyone and runs through February. Participants are asked to log their weight loss and minutes of physical activity on the Commit to Fit website. Free group fitness classes will once again be offered at various locations, including Hurley Health and Fitness.
If the gym, or coordination, isn't your thing, just about any type of winter physical activity can tracked.
"Make a snowman, have a snowball fight. Shovel your driveway, go ice skating if its accessible to you," said Amanda Delandsheer, of the Greater Flint Health Coalition.
Weekly prizes will be awarded to those who fully commit.
"We're going to be giving away Flint Farmers Market gift cards. You can go down to the market and get some healthy foods and some other stuff, also up to $100 in cash incentives," Cuttitta said.
It's all part of Commit to Fit's partnership with the market, one that now features monthly nutritional cooking demonstrations.
"We'll have one the first Saturday in February. Have some fun, learn how to cook something that's healthy. You'll get samples and recipes to take home," Cuttitta said.
That's only the beginning of what Commit to Fit has planned for the new year.
"We'll be doing a commit to fit college challenge, and then in the spring time, we have a really fun Mayor's Wellness Challenge that we're doing with City of Flint Mayor Dayne Walling, who's going to lead the charge toward healthier activities and lead by example of how we can be a little bit healthier in everyday life," Cuttitta said.
