Local woman charged after 5 adult foster care homes are shut down

Posted: Updated:

(01/14/14) - We're getting a first look at the woman who investigators believe illegally ran at least five adult foster care homes in Genesee County.

Fifty-nine-year-old Mary Tahtinen was arraigned on Friday with three counts of operating an unlicensed facility and one count of failing to conduct background checks on employees.

All charges are felonies.

She is free on bond and expected back in court later this month.

It was back in early September when we reported a raid by the Genesee County Sheriff's Department on five homes.

They were in Burton, Flint, Flint Township, Montrose and Thetford Township.

After they were shutdown, at least 17 people were removed and placed in other care centers.

An investigation by the county's Elder Abuse Task Force revealed quote "horrible" conditions.
