(01/15/14) - It's a new restaurant - bringing a rather new concept to Mid-Michigan. The Grafted Root Eatery is now open for business in Grand Blanc.
"I'm trying to serve people real food. I'm trying to get away from the processed food, and serve them real food, real simple. That's our motto," said Michele Matthews, owner, Grafted Root Eatery.
Michele Mathews and her husband Bryon are doing whatever they can to buy fresh and buy local from Michigan growers and vendors. It's all part of the "farm to table movement" that's been sweeping the country.
"It's becoming big because people have recognized that it tastes much better when it's fresh and local. Even for example, the honey here is made from Flint bees," Bryon said.
The menu features Chicken Pecatta, vegetable lasagna, and homemade soups - a little bit of anything and everything - at what the owners hope are affordable prices.
"It's kind of like when you live in Europe, you look at the blackboard to see what they're serving, so everyday we tend to have something new and different," Bryon said.
Michele warns that while her food may be fresh, organic, and preservative free, it's not calorie free.
"I use butter and cream. I don't use non-fat stuff, and there's no sweet and low here, so you'll have to carry your own packets, but we have raw honey and raw sugar and other things that are better and that your body knows how to process," she said.
The Grafted Root is waiting on its liquor license, and plans to serve Michigan beers and wines. As for the atmosphere - it doesn't necessarily look like a traditional restaurant.
"I wanted to build a place to make you feel like you're coming into my home. Come in, relax, slow down in life," Michelle said.
Since opening last week, a steady flow of customers have been walking through the door.
"It's been a dream for a long time, and I'm amazed at the response I've gotten from the community, so it's been wonderful," Michelle said.
The Grafted Root Eatery is located on Saginaw Street, across from Grand Blanc High School.
