Ford plans to take the Mustang worldwide

DETROIT (WJRT) -

(01/16/14) - If you visit the North American Auto Show in Detroit, you'll see the 2015 Ford Mustang on display.

Even after a half century in production, the Mustang remains popular. The changes that have been made will likely keep sales strong.

This fall, the 2015 Mustang will roll into dealer showrooms. If reaction at the car show is any indication, it could be a galloping success.

"This is everything we wanted the Mustang to be and more. What we always try to do on Mustang is improve, improve, improve and we improved every bit of this Mustang," said Tom Barnes, Mustang vehicle engineering manager.

The Mustang will be observing its 50th anniversary later this year. The latest version still has some of the original DNA.

"We want people to feel emotion and have a smile on their faces. That's what it's about," Barnes said.

The 2015 Mustang looks a little more aerodynamic and a little less angular.

"We have all new sheet metal, we have all new powertrains. We have all new features, all wrapped up in a great looking package," Barnes said.

We asked Ford executive chairman Bill Ford Jr. what he thought about the redesign.

"Are you kidding? I love it. I think the team did a fabulous job with the Mustang. When I went to Barcelona and introduced it there, the Europeans really liked it. The fact that we're going to have right-hand drive is a big deal," he said.

Even though they plan to sell Mustangs around the world, the only assembly plant will be in Flat Rock, just south of Detroit.
