Cleanup continues where tanker exploded, state takes over cleanup contract

DAVISON TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(01/17/14) - A portion of road where a tanker crashed, exploded and burned, in Genesee County's Davison Township earlier this month, is still closed as crews continue to cleanup the area.

Northbound Irish Road, under the overpass near I-69, is still shutdown. The ramp to westbound I-69 from that direction is also still closed. Drivers can't turn left, onto Irish Road, from the eastbound exit ramp.

"We have a new contract to get the cleanup taking place," said Linda Burchell, Manager of MDOT's Davison Transportation Service Center. "We hope to have that completed within the next one or two weeks."

That tanker was carrying about 12,000 gallons of crude oil when it crashed Jan. 2. Nearly all of it burned.

The driver made it out on his own and safe.

His trucking company is responsible for paying for the cleanup and containment.

Burchell said there was a concern the trucking company wasn't going to be able to pay for the cleanup and that delayed the process.

The state stepped in earlier this week and is the new contract holder for now.

"It's an environmental site," Burchell said. "It needs to be done and we want to get our roadways open."

The same cleanup company, Young's Environmental Cleanup, was the successful bidder, according to Burchell.

Once their work is done, roads crews can really assess what will have to be replaced on the roadway.

ABC12 has tried, unsuccessfully, to contact the trucking company a number of times.

There's still no word on whether the driver has been or will be issued a ticket for the accident.

There's no estimate available yet for what cleanup will cost or if and how the trucking company will be forced to pay.
