FLINT (WJRT) -

(01/19/14) - He did what he felt was right.  Vic McEwen, owner of the Social Network Event Center in Flint, held a free dinner to honor Dr. Martin Luther Jr. on Sunday.

"Well I just felt a responsibility to this man who had done so much for this country," he says.  "So that's the main thing I want to come out of this, is to right a wrong."

McEwen says he was as surprised and disgusted as anyone when a group who planned to rent his event center sent out advertisements for their party featuring a picture of the late civil rights leader wearing a huge, gold chain and flashing a "west side" hand sign. The flyer read "Freedom to Twerk."

McEwen says he had no idea about the flyer until after it was sent out. When he did find out about it, he canceled the event and decided to hold a more appropriate one.

"The main thing I want is for folks to see who this man was, just get an idea," McEwen said.  "Folks our age and older, we should already know. But these children that are here, I want to introduce Martin Luther King to them."

The former marine's friends say they were just as surprised to see McEwen caught up in something like this, but they think he handled it well.

"That was not a thing, at all, that I'd think Vic would be a part of," says Danen Williams. "So it was really confusing to see all of it going on."

"I support Vic in this day, because this is what he does," said Rev. Derwin Harris. "He promotes a lot of positives within our community."

McEwen says he hopes to make the dinner an annual event.
