(01/20/14) - Could there be rapid bus service from Bay City to the Motor City?

Genesee County's Mass Transportation Authority is starting a study to look into rapid transit service along I-75.

MTA says they're conducting the study because the need for commuter transportation continues to grow.

They're trying to determine the best way to address this in the future.

The general manager of MTA says they received a planning grant to conduct a study of the I-75 corridor.

The money was approved in 2009 and they were eligible for the award in 2010.

Now they want to move forward with the study.

MTA says this is great for the community because they provide 2,000 - 3,000 trips for jobs outside of the area.

They say this would allow people to commute to other places without having to leave the area.

"It's great for the community because it allows you go live here and access jobs in other communities and today we have what's known as reverse commute. We have individuals living in other communities that are now using public transit to come to our community to work or to pass through and go to Saginaw for example so it's an opportunity for us to determine what the needs are today but in the future and how best to address it," said Ed Benning, general manager of MTA.

MTA is going to request proposals to get this study started.

There's also been talk about bus rapid transit which is where they use rubber wheeled buses that would operate in special lanes.
