School security expert: public shootings are a disturbing new trend

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) -

(01/22/14) - The University of Oklahoma went into a brief lock down after reports of shots on the school's campus.

It was a false alarm. Officials say the sounds of construction work may have been mistaken for gunfire.

Students may have been on edge because, Tuesday, a teaching assistant at Purdue University in Indiana was shot and killed in a classroom, allegedly by another student.

All this violence in public is putting schools and businesses in Mid-Michigan on edge.

Some are taking extra precautions in case any similar situation happen here at home.

"We all want to think it's not going to happen to me," said Tom Mynsberge, an expert in school security.

But it seems like time and time again the nation is shocked by a new tragedy.

And it's not a private ordeal; it's out in the public eye, such as a movie theater, a mall or a school.

Mynsberge has worked with law enforcement for nearly 40 years.

A former state trooper, he now owns his own business, Critical Incident Management.

"I'm probably the only one in the nation that I train the schools and I call it tactical survival," he said.

He teaches people how to react in shooter situations, such as the tragedy at Sandy Hook.

It's not something schools even thought about 30 years ago.

But in today's world, Mynsberge said it's not just schools, it's businesses who want his help.

"I think it's responsible, if I own a movie theater and I have them in there just give me the tools or have the tools for the employees to minimize the impact for families in there," he said.

Everyone wants to know one thing after a tragedy: why. Mynsberge said he can't answer that, but public violence does seem to be a new, disturbing trend.

"Sometimes with the youth when they go in there after the shooting starts you see the remorse in them and they say, had I rethought several seconds on my life I wouldn't have done this," he said.

When it comes to planning for this kind of emergency, Mynsberge said Saginaw area schools are among the most proactive in the nation.
