Flint 4-year-old left alone on bus in the freezing cold

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(01/22/14) - There was a scary situation for a 4-year-old boy after he was left alone on a bus for hours in the freezing cold, Wednesday.

ABC12 talked to the boy's mother at their Flint home.

Hillary told us the bus arrived around 7:20 Wednesday morning to take her son, Va'Ton, to Eagles Nest Child Care Center in Flint.

"It was -7 when I put him on the bus," she said.

Hillary says he fell asleep on the way there and when the bus pulled up to the child care center, all the kids got off. Va'Ton was still sleeping, but the bus monitor did not notice. It was her job to keep track of the students.

"He fell asleep and so he was missed as the other kids got off the bus," Hillary said.

Va'Ton said he woke up alone on the bus with no heat, no food and no bathroom.

Fortunately, his mother packed a blanket and pillow for him to use during nap time at school. He needed it on that chilly bus.

"I picked my cover up and sat on my pillow and I was cold again," Va'Ton said.

Cold and hungry, Va'Ton sat on the bus until 2 p.m., when the bus driver finally came back to take the kids home. That's when she saw Va'Ton.

"I said, 'Why did you leave me in this bus the whole time?'" Va'Ton said.

Wednesday night, we talked to the administrator for Eagles Nest Child Care Center.

Deloris Flynn confirmed the child was left on the bus. She told us she fired the bus monitor. It was the bus monitor's job to count the children.

"She really, really did not do her job today, she has expressed her apologies," Flynn said.
