(01/23/14) - Some beautiful snow sculptures are taking shape at the 2014 Zehnder's Snowfest in Frankenmuth, but getting there could take some extra planning.
"Little Bavaria" is welcoming teams from China, France, Mexico and all across the U.S., but a bridge closing near Frankenmuth could force you to take the long way around to see them.
For many snow sculptors, Snowfest is always on their winter calendar.
"I sculpt with my brother and his friend. It's just a tradition. It's a time every year we get to spend a week together," said Caitlin Moore, of Millington.
"I spend six weeks a year cruising around the country doing snow sculptures. It's actually a pretty good gig," said Ian Washington, of Sarnia, Ontario.
"We're artistic. We do art stuff, so being in sculpture, it's fun to work on a huge, 3D form that's bigger than life," said Christy Dunsmore, of Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Most of the sculptors don't mind the extra cold weather.
"It's actually better, this cold, because it holds together. You can hit it with a chisel. It's a nice firm edge. When it gets a little warm, it get a little soft, chunks will fly off and fall. Sometimes you knock off a nose and you have to fix it," said Charlie Schreier, of Columbus, Ohio.
Something else that needs fixing is the Dehmel Road bridge over Dead Creek in Frankenmuth Township. The Saginaw County Road Commission closed it recently because of structural issues.
"I think there's going to be more jam ups in town on M-83. It'll slow traffic down," said Betty Lamski, of Frankenmuth.
Not only will this be an inconvenience for those trying to get to Snowfest, but the bridge could be out until next November, making it difficult to get to a variety of Frankenmuth events.
"Quite often that's our sneak through to pass all the other traffic coming through, so it is inconvenient," said Alisa Baker, of Flint.
Dehmel Road is closed between Warnick and Townline Roads in Frankenmuth Township.
Snowfest runs through Sunday evening. Fireworks are planned for 6:45 Saturday night.
