(01/24/14) - The cold weather is slowing down business for some Mid-Michigan moving companies.
Moving companies say it's tough to get furniture in and out of homes. They're having to fight with icy driveways and extremely windy weather.
"I've done this moving service 35 years and this is the coldest winter I can ever remember," said John Stanley, of City Moving Service.
Business hasn't been slow at all for moving companies like City Moving Service. Some days they have to work out in the cold for about four hours at a time.
"This is almost unbearable when you're loading a truck for three or four hours, it's a long time, your feet and hands get frozen," Stanley said.
Having to work outside in this brutal weather is taking its toll on the workers. They're dealing with snow that's blowing all over the place and driveways that are tough to get into. That slows down business.
"A lot of our customers are senior citizens and they can't always get out the shovels, so carrying pianos and furniture over snow and ice, it definitely slows it down, the roads, it slows it down," Stanley said.
Even though these workers try to dress warm, sometimes too many layers doesn't make their job any easier. That's why they have to take their gloves off sometimes or else, "You can't get a grip on anything," Stanley said. "That's why my hands, after 35 years, they look like that, you can't wear gloves when you're moving furniture."
Those workers say when they get too cold, they try to take extra breaks.
