Teen turns himself in, Flint Police still seeking one in MTA bus driver assault

FLINT (WJRT) -

(01/28/14) - Flint Police credit viewer tips in the identification and arrest of a 16-year-old male, the person investigators believe threw the punch which injured a MTA bus driver.

Detective Sergeant Karl Petrich said he turned himself in Monday, Jan. 27 and is being held in the county's juvenile detention center.

ABC12 first ran the story, and surveillance pictures, Friday, Jan. 24.

Police are still trying to identify the third person believed to be involved - a male, likely in his late teens. He was wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt in the pictures police provided.

Petrich said the assault, a punch in the face by a passenger, occurred Thursday night.  He has a number of broken bones on his face.  Petrich said he had "major" facial surgery scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The assault was caught on camera.

Only ABC12 has the pictures of the people police believe are involved.

It was one punch, by one person, but Flint Police believe three teenagers total are tied to the incident including, they say, one who recorded the attack on his cell phone and may have even posted it online.

Petrich said two people, possibly in their late teens, were mad because one of them had to pay to ride.

Bus cameras show they both were in the back of the bus for a bit then moved up front.

Petrich said the pair was only on board for about seven minutes before that punch was thrown, when the driver stopped at M.L. King Ave. and 9th Ave., and they took off running.

It's hard to see because of the way the camera records, but the shot shows the guy in red cocking back and then the driver cupping his face.

Police say he spent several hours at the hospital and has several broken bones on both sides of his face.

If all of that isn't bad enough, a 15-year-old boy allegedly recorded the assault on his cell phone and may have even uploaded the video to Facebook.

An officer in the juvenile bureau was able to ID him from the footage.

Police have questioned and arrested him.

If you recognize the remaining person in the pictures, please call Petrich at 810-237-6912.
