Storms putting a strain on budgets

Posted: Updated:

(01/24/14) - Road crews have been working overtime in last few weeks, clearing roads after back to back storms.

These storms are putting a strain on the budgets of many county road commissions.

ABC12 talked to Dean Welte, the managing director for the Shiawassee County Road Commission.

Welte has been with the road commission for 19 years, but it's his first year as managing director.

He says Shiawasee County has about a $300,000 budget with MDOT to take care of all the M route's and I-69.

But, most of  that money is almost gone.

"We have exacerbated about 98 percent of that so we don't have a whole lot more in our state budget," Welte said.

If that money runs out, they still have to do their job of salting, plowing and clearing the roads.

So the road commission will have to pull the money from other areas and that could impact projects long after winter is long gone.

"You could  see cut backs on summer maintenance which is pot holes, they never go away,  and we mow medians on I-69, you may see them cut down on that," Welte said.
