Ferrellgas customers quoted one price, charged much more

SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) -

(01/28/14) - It's important to make sure your home is properly heated during bitter, cold winters like this one.

Unfortunately, people who heat their homes with propane gas are dealing with a shortage, which has caused a rise in prices.

The rate hike at one propane company is making some customers hot under the collar.

Some customers of Ferrellgas Company say they were quoted a price for a gallon of propane, but when the gas was delivered just a few days later, they were charged a whole lot more.

Rochelle Eastman lives in Saginaw County's Brant Township with her husband and their three children. When their propane tank ran low during this cold winter, she called Ferrellgas Company. The family has done business with Ferrellgas for about three years.

"I needed gas on Friday and I called and they told me $3.71 a gallon and I paid $502 for the 125 gallons I was going to get," Eastman said.

But that's not what she got.

"On Monday, they delivered and I get the receipt and its says $5.69 a gallon," Eastman said.

The price for a gallon of propane went about $2 higher than quoted, and only 104 gallons of propane was put in the tank.

Other Ferrellgas customers have contacted ABC12 News to tell similar stories.

Ferrellgas spokesperson, Scott Brockelmeyer, says the company is aware of the situation, and in a written statement says, "Given the wild fluctuations recently in the wholesale price of propane, it's possible that the amount paid to secure propane is dramatically different this week from retailer to retailer."

That's true. Another Mid-Michigan fuel company, Parker Propane, has also been raising its prices, but at a slower pace. Its current price is $3.29 a gallon.

Eastman may eventually switch to another company, but for now, she hopes her latest propane delivery is the last for her family this winter.

"We can't turn it down anymore to save money, are we going to send them to bed with 10 layers of clothes on and 50 blankets to keep them warm," she said.

The company says its policy is to charge customers based on its own cost on the day of delivery.

However, late Tuesday afternoon, Ferrellgas did call Eastman back to say they will now honor that originally quoted price of $3.71.
