(01/29/14) - We're just days away from the Winter Games, and when you're watching Olympic hockey on TV, look closely, because you're going to see the ice filled with goalie gear that came right out of Mid-Michigan.
Out of an Oxford, Michigan factory - all the way to Sochi, Russia - the staff at Vaughn Hockey is working overtime to get its custom made goalie gear in shape for the Olympic games.
"It's great. I think that everybody that works here is proud of it," said Scott Hughes, of Vaughn Hockey.
Vaughn is making everything from masks and sticks to gloves, blockers, pads and pants for 18 Olympians.
"Ryan Miller from the U.S., Jonathan Quick, Jimmy Howard, Tuukka Rask, Antti Niemi. Those are five prime time, big time NHL stars," Hughes said.
Hughes consulted closely with each goalie to come up with a design.
"Jimmy Howard, he has red, white and navy to represent the US. For Finland, they have white and a color called Aviator Blue, so their gear matches their country color," he said.
Vaughn has actually been doing Olympic production since the 80s, and has seen its goalies win somewhere between 15 to 20 medals. Nothing is bigger for business than when one of its clients wins the gold.
"You want the U.S. to win, but if they're not in it, you're rooting for whatever Vaughn guys are left, but our loyalties lie with the U.S.," Hughes said.
