Genesee Co. leaders holding meeting to better prepare for winter emergencies

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(01/29/14) - It's been a record-breaking, brutal winter for us here in Mid-Michigan.

While it's a pain for most of us, it's been down right dangerous for others.

There were times when the snow and ice stopped Genesee County services in their tracks.

The snow, ice and wind left thousands without power earlier this winter and many neighbors were snowed in, stuck in their homes for days.

Some leaders are saying the county could've done better in helping these people, so they're forming a plan.

Schools and businesses have been shutting down while the snow falls and the mercury plunges, but County Commissioner Brenda Clack said it's more than just a nuisance in Genesee County.

"We had some interesting situations in some cases, some horrible situations that took place and no one could do anything about it or the buck was passed," she said.

Piles of snow made it too dangerous for crews to deliver oxygen tanks or food for the elderly.

People just didn't know where to turn for help, so Clack and State Senator Jim Ananich decided the county needs a plan.

"We want to hear what happened to individuals so we can form a plan for next time," Clack said.

Thursday night, they're asking you to come to their meeting and share your winter emergency story with them.

That way, they can figure out how to handle it next time.

"For citizens not to know who to call and when they did call to be pushed off on someone else is what we just can not tolerate," Clack said.

That meeting will be held 6:15-8 p.m., Thursday on the third floor of the Genesee County building.
