Raising chickens in Davison may soon be legal

Posted: Updated:
DAVISON (WJRT) -

(01/30/14) - A 9-year-old local girl took on the system and won.

Chloe Hinkley just wanted to raise her own chickens, but it's illegal for people to own the animals in Davison.

So, Chloe went on a crusade to change that law, and she may have done it.

Last year, she wrote a letter, collected signatures and presented them to the Davison City Council to get the law changed.

Her hard work paid off.

Recently, the Davison City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance allowing people to raise chickens.

"We will have a second reading on it and after the snow goes away, you are welcome to have chickens in the city of Davison," said Mayor Tim Bishop.

Spring can't come soon enough for Chloe. She already has plans to buy her chickens and she's learned a valuable lesson along the way.

"Kids count, kids' voices count," she said.
