Road commissions are running low on salt

Posted: Updated:

(02/01/14) - Road crews are out salting the roads, but some road commissions are starting to run out because of all the snow.

Saturday, we talked to the managing director for the Shiawassee County Road Commission.

Dean Welte says they are running low on salt provided to them by the state.

"We are getting a little depleted on the state system. We have used almost 5,000 tons to this point in the year. We are down to 1,700. If February is anything like January, we are going to be in trouble, as far as the state trying to get some salt."

Welte also said at least one municipality had to borrow salt from Shiawassee County because they ran out.
