Chrysler fights trend, has strong sales in January

FENTON (WJRT) -

(02/03/14) - It was a tough month for General Motors and Ford. Chrysler, however, continued its climb with an increase of 8 percent.

Just a few years ago, the future of the company was very much in doubt. A merger with Fiat and strong pickup sales are helping Chrysler turn around.

January 2014 won't be remembered warmly by car sales reps in the Midwest and northeast.

"Our foot traffic was not great because of some of the weather situations," said Jim Hall, president of Hall Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Fenton.

The sales staff prevailed, helping to give Chrysler strong sales numbers for January. Ram pickup figures jumped 22 percent for the month.

"The truck market in general is extremely competitive. It's extremely competitive in the entire mix of the products. Certainly with Ram being Motor Trend Truck of the Year two years in a row, Chrysler feels pretty good about what they got," Hall said.

Maybe the harsh weather partially explains why Jeep sales were up 38 percent last month.

"The Jeep brand has always sold well. There has not been an incentive on the Wrangler, ever. That vehicle sells fantastically. We can never produce enough of them or get enough of them to sell," Hall said.

Every year, as the auto show in Detroit winds down, the activity in dealer showrooms jumps.

"There's a little pick up from the North American International Auto Show, which has helped increase traffic. And as people come in, they see some of our new products," Hall said.

The strong January performance gives Chrysler dealers hope that the worst is behind the Auburn Hills-based automaker.

"I think all Chrysler dealers are pleased with the products we have, the products we continue to get," he said.

Hall says Chrysler dealers are also excited about the redesigned 200 that will be in dealer showrooms this fall.
