Auburn area sports complex nearing completion

WILLIAMS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(02/03/14) - The much-anticipated Tri-City Sports Complex is really starting to take shape, despite Mother Nature's best efforts to slow down construction.

It's a familiar complaint.

"As everybody will tell you, this is one of the worst winters we've had in a long time," said Stan Dulaney, co-owner of the Tri-City Sports Complex.

"The weather, we've had some challenges," said co-owner, Manoj Shah.

Dulaney and Shah had hoped to have their 73,500 square foot indoor center opened by now, but Mother Nature had other plans.

"Started hitting us in the spring. We had a great deal of rain," Dulaney said.

"Towards the middle of December we had all that rain," Shah said.

"And then we got to this stage and now we have ice storms, snow storms," Dulaney said.

"Cold, cold temperatures that we had," Shah said.

Over the weekend, Manoj, Dulaney and the rest of the team put a big one in the win column.

"The dome's up and we have more work to do," Dulaney said.

"This is the most critical step," Shah said.

Now workers can spend more time inside, safe from the elements.

The next step is a key one. That's to thaw this frozen ground so it can be leveled off and covered with turf.

But that's not all.

"Put up the lights. We have to put in the security doors, we have to test everything, make sure it's all functional," Shah said.

When it's done, this facility will be open year-round for sports ranging from soccer to softball to lacrosse and everything else in between.

"We see the light at the end of the tunnel right now," Dulaney said.

"When we have winters, we have weather like this, people get caught up in there's no place to go, and this is what we're trying to bring to the community."

If the weather cooperates, they hope to open in the next few weeks.
