(02/04/14) - It's something new that's about the sprint through Mid-Michigan - the first ever Burton Race Series. Supporters gathered at city hall to get the word out early Tuesday morning.
"You can see from all the people that are here this morning, all the enthusiasm of promoting fitness here in the city of Burton. We're really excited about this," said Paula Zelenko, Burton mayor.
The series begins with the Hot Chocolate 5K on Feb. 15.
Four races in all - each with its own theme and course.
"The Hot Chocolate, you'll run through the highest point in Burton, which is the overpass over I-69. The Veterans Honor Run in November, you'll run through our fire station, and the Memorial Day Race, we'll have some special surprises," said Vaughn Smith, Burton Race Series committee member.
A few incentives are planned for anyone that decides to run them all.
"You run three of the four races, and we have a nice medal for you, a reward for you spending 2014 getting fit," Smith said.
Proceeds will benefit a variety of causes.
"We're donating to Pack the Truck, so the kids have school supplies when the start school, scholarships for seniors through our Kiwanis, and we help out the Disabled American Veterans as well," Zelenko said.
Mayor Zelenko hopes all those runners can work wonders for Burton's economy after crossing the finish line.
"Stop at our restaurants, shop at our mall, do some investigating in Burton," Zelenko said.
While the inaugural Burton Race Series will feature four races, organizers are already looking ahead to next year and are considering expanding that roster.
"We have other people that want to do races already. I see at least one more timed run and one more non-timed run that could be part of the series," Smith said.
