Harsh weather affecting Mid-Michigan retailers

Posted: Updated:

(2/4/14) This winter's heavy snow is having a chilling effect on mid-Michigan businesses. Many report fewer people are visiting their stores because of the extra effort it takes to get there.

But others are finding business is surprisingly good.

It's an issue facing many mid-Michigan residents. If you have to shovel yourself out of your driveway and then navigate icy roads, you might ask yourself "is this shopping trip necessary?"

"Business has been up and down a little bit. The cool weather and snow has been hard for people to get out," said Tom Macksood of Macksood Pools and Spas.

Macksood says it the timing of the winter storms has been bad. Many have hit on weekends. That's traditionally when most people visit his Mt. Morris Township store. But there is a bright spot in this otherwise gloomy picture.

"One thing that has been good for business is our fireplaces. Gas logs, our wood stoves, gas fireplaces. As you can imagine, people are out looking for heat," said Macksood.

At Johnny's Pour House in Flushing, customers refuse to let Old Man Winter keep them away.

"We're very lucky in Flushing. They do a great job keeping the roads clear so that helps quite a big. I think people get some cabin fever after awhile and like to get out on the weekends and find something to do," said John Roe of Johnny's Pour House.

At Bueche's Food World, business picks up when people are prompted to stock up on the essentials.

"The forecast usually pushes people in here. Everybody wants to be prepared in case they can't get back into the store," said Sunny Murphy, assistant store director at Bueche's
