Paraplegic man needs help finding stolen wheelchair

Posted: Updated:
GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(02/04/14) - It was his main source of transportation and 33-year-old Thomas Beck can't understand why anyone would steal his wheelchair.

Beck is a paraplegic and without it, some of the simplest tasks can be difficult.

He noticed it had been stolen when he attempted to leave his home Sunday.

"It's pretty sad that we live in a world where somebody feels that they have to take a wheelchair from somebody that doesn't have a lot to begin with," Beck said.

Beck, who has been in a wheelchair most of his life, says it's the only thing he can depend on to get him where he needs to go.

He's been a paraplegic since he was three days old. After having open heart surgery, he was left without use of his legs.

"That's like my legs. I have to use that to be able to get around. If I don't have it, I don't go anywhere. I have to rely way more on other people," he said.

It hasn't been easy trying to get around for the past few days.

He says his sister was the first person he reached out to when he realized that someone stole his wheel chair that he generally leaves outside of his home.

"I had to crawl. It wasn't fun. I was very cold and I was soaked by the time that I got into her house," he said.

Help is on the way for Beck. Pastor Keith O'Neal with the Good Samaritan Network says his organization is trying to raise money so that the disabled man can get around like he used to.

"One that's more suitable for the weather so we're going to get him a better wheel chair and we believe good Samaritans all over Mid-Michigan are going to respond," O'Neal said.

"That wheelchair is my livelihood without that I don't have really much," Beck said.

Beck's birthday is on Friday. His only wish is to have a wheel chair.

Beck also says he did contact police.
