(02/07/14) - A Mid-Michigan business that's been serving customers for 40 years is closing up shop.
Saturday is the last day for the Swartz Creek Bakery.
David Bedel started coming to the Swartz Creek Bakery 30 years ago. He didn't always need a table for six like he has now.
"Somebody comes over here and they look kinda sad and so we invite him over and that's how it happens," he said.
For decades now, Bedel and his friends meet there every morning. The faces sitting around the table change occasionally, but the coffee, doughnut and good conversations are constants.
1"We've lost a number of them that have passed on. There's always someone that comes in here that retires and has a few minutes on their hands and they start visiting. It's an evolving group," Bedel said.
What has never changed, is the location - but that will soon change. After 40 years in downtown Swartz Creek, the bakery is closing.
"It's too bad, it's really been a nice social thing for us old folks because we don't really have anything else to do," Bedel said.
Theresa Durham has been serving this group for 14 years. She's not only saying goodbye to a job she loves, but customers that seem like family.
"You see them every day. I see them more than my family and that's what will be hard is the people," she said.
"This has been a perfect spot for us. We've been here through several owners and it's really been unchanged for several years as far as I'm concerned," Bedel said.
Saturday will be the last day the Bakery is open. It's closing because the owner of the building has decided to sell.
