LANSING (WJRT) -

(02/12/14) - Consumers Energy is announcing new resources for customers during what it's calling unprecedented cold. The company is launching a Severe Weather Assistance team. It will include a dedicated call center for customer concerns.

The Call Center will be up and running starting Monday. That number will be 1-800-477-5050.

Consumers is also extending assistance programs currently available for customers struggling to pay their bills.

"Other ways Consumers is helping those in need this season is extending special discounts for bills on Michigan's homeless shelters for an additional month and that will cover for March," said Garrick Rochow, with Consumers Energy.

Consumers says energy usage is up 26 percent this season, but natural gas prices are the lowest they've been in a decade.
