Flint police chief presents crime fighting plan

FLINT (WJRT) -

(02/14/14) - Flint's police chief presented his new public safety strategy to members of Flint's new public safety committee.

His plan goes beyond adding more officers and works to solve some of the problems on the streets.

Flint Police Chief James Tolbert is taking a different approach to reducing crime in Flint.

"It's a way of looking at crime in a more analytical way, when you look at the drivers of crime as opposed to areas of crime," Tolbert said.

Tolbert's plan includes three initiatives.

One being developing an area crimes team, targeting people driving crimes in neighborhoods.

"We have to look at history of individual, see if he or she is coming up on our radar and if that's the case we develop a strategy to go after that person," Tolbert said.

The other two initiatives include a crime intervention program similar to cease fire and  "operation fresh start" which would help people get misdemeanor warrants wiped off their records at one location.

"We can put them in a place, where before hand we can take care of the warrants, give them a license and possible give them the opportunity to get a job," Tolbert said.

Next up is finding the money to pay for his plan.

Tolbert plans to the lobby Gov. Snyder and go after grants.

If that falls through, Tolbert says he'll implement a scaled down version of his plan.

"We really have to have something in place by the time the weather breaks," Tolbert said.

Emergency Manager Darnell Earley is also looking at ways to improve public safety.

Earley says he is looking to hire a public safety consulting service to go through the public safety department top to bottom.
