LANSING (WJRT) -

(02/13/14) - The head of Michigan's Department of Corrections is taking responsibility for the recent escape of a convicted killer.

State Lawmakers in Lansing, Thursday, questioned corrections director Dan Heyns about the escape of Michael Elliot.

He broke out of Ionia Correctional Facility earlier this month.

He was arrested in Indiana.

Heyns says he's certain of the root cause of the escape, but declined to share specifics, citing an ongoing attorney general's investigation.

Heyns is speeding up the upgrade of surveillance cameras and lighting at the Ionia prison.
