Valentine's Day means big business for florists

Posted: Updated:

(02/14/14) - There's plenty of love in the air at Vogt's Flowers. Early Valentine's Day morning, the company's Flint warehouse was jam-packed with roses, ready to be shipped out.

"You know, we'll do over 1,000 deliveries, just this afternoon," said Kreg Krueger,  Vogt's Flowers owner.

Krueger says Valentine's Day is always big, but with it falling on a Friday and President's Day weekend, this is one of the biggest in Vogt's 95 year's of business.

"Roses of course are the number one flower of the holiday, and today, we'll sell about 10,000 of those right here in Flint and this week, we'll sell over 20,000," Krueger said.

To manage the rush, Vogt's doubled its Valentines Day staff from 50 to more than 100.

"Over 35 drivers, the extra sales people, designers, the extra people to process flowers. It is a crazy, crazy day," Krueger said.

With snow and ice freezing over the country, Krueger was worried he might not have enough roses to keep up with the demand.

"All the flowers have to be brought in. You're watching the weather not only from Miami, but all the way up here and you're worried about the storms slowing up the trucks. The quality of the roses was a huge, huge concern, but thank goodness, it's been wonderful," he said.

Something else that Vogt's finds wonderful - all of those last minute shoppers.

"They come in with the money in their hand. That's the first thing, they don't even have to reach in their pocket, they already have it in their hand. I need something. You say what do you want? They say what do you have?'" Krueger said.

Nothing says 'Be Mine' like a carefully crafted card to go along with your flowers, and it looks like somebody named Big Poppa is taking care of quite a few Valentines this year. Some of these cards are naughtier than others.

"Some of the funniest are "R-Rated" or worse yet, and all the special names people come up with for their special one, so they're funny," Krueger said.

Vogt's and other Mid-Michigan florists planned to keep their doors open well into the evening.
