Couple discovers their 40+ year marriage has been VOID all these years

FLINT (WJRT) -

(02/14/14) - Imagine being with the love of your life for more than 40 years, only to find out the whole time your marriage was not valid.

It happened to a local couple, who spent this Valentine's Day setting the record straight.

Armed with photos of their kids, wedding, and even tax returns, Leonard and Sandra Owen went before Genesee County Probate Court Judge Jenny Barkey to get their marriage validated.

While doing a search for an old classmate on the Genesee County Clerks website, Sandra says she decided to look up her own marriage record - and that's when she found it marked VOID.

The couple got married in 1971.

Turns out, the person who married them, failed to file the original license, so for 42 years there was no official record of their union.

Without official record of the marriage, the two could have run into serious legal trouble with things like taxes, insurance policies, and pensions.
