Chamber of Commerce announces 'Made in Flint and Genesee'

FLINT (WJRT) -

(02/17/14) - The Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce would like to see consumers and businesses purchase more products that are made or grown in the area. So, it has started a new program to encourage that.

It's called "Made in Flint and Genesee."

One of the first companies to sign up for the new program is Michigan's Greatest Fudge, which is based in Burton.

"Chamber members buying from Chamber members is an extremely healthy way to continue to build our economy," said Bob Peterson, owner of Michigan's Greatest Fudge.

Businesses that belong to the Chamber and make, assemble and sell their own products will appear on the Made in Flint and Genesee Web page on the Chamber website. They'll also have use of a Made in Flint and Genesee logo, which is designed to help consumers identify products and services that originate locally.

"They're very, very good at connecting you with other Chamber members. It's a matter of scratching backs, you know, you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. I support you, you support me. The other thing is I kind of looked at it as a village raising a child. We're a small company and kind of just getting started. All these other people have been so energetic, trying to help us out and put us in front of the right people," Peterson said.

The buy local effort is attracting a lot of attention from area business people.

"We just started it, so it's on a small scale, but we're certain that once the word get out that people will contact us and really want to take advantage of this platform to reach our members and people we do business with. I think it will take on a life of it's own," said Heather Kale, Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce member services director.
