A look inside Bay City's Mill End Lofts

BAY CITY (WJRT) -

(02/17/14) - Construction on downtown Bay City's newest apartments will soon be completed and two dozen units are ready to be leased.

We are getting our first look inside the Mill End Lofts, which are set to open in April.

Even though this $7.5 million development project isn't done yet, more than half of the lofts have already been leased.

The Mill End store is gone. Now the Mill End Lofts are on Water Street between Fifth and Center Avenue in downtown Bay City. Interior designer Kathy Staudacher says the lofts are a bit of industrial, mixed with contemporary, and they're bringing back some aspects of the building that once stood here.

"It is new construction, but we wanted it to feel like its been on the property for a long time and that it belonged in our downtown," she said.

Staudacher's parents, Bay City developers Paul and Peggy Rowley, got the idea while looking at the old Mill End building across the street from their Jenison Place Condominium home.

"They decided that we really needed some apartments, rentals, in Bay City, hopefully down by the river that would attract young professionals to move back to Bay City," Staudacher said.

The units range in size from 960 square feet to more than 1,600 square feet. Rent begins at $1,100 per month.

"This is an urban infill project, and we designed the building to fit the context of downtown Bay City," said John Hill of the Three Rivers Corporation.

Hill was the architect for the project. His company also managed the construction phase.

"The building looks out on the river and the park, so there is a lot of daylight and views in each one of these units," Hill said.

Those units are being leased at a quick pace.

"We have at least one of every single layout apartment leased, so we think we have the right mix," Staudacher said.

There is also first floor commercial space available and the hope is that a restaurant will be one of the tenants in the Mill End building.
