Ice dams can cause trouble for homeowners

Posted: Updated:

(02/18/14) - Melting snow can quickly turn into ice. While they look pretty, roofing contractors see the hazard they pose.

"You get the sun coming out, heat loss through the attic. It starts to melt the snow off of the roof. It starts to slide down the roof. It gets to the overhang part of the house, which most houses have, then that area is cold, so it starts to freeze again. And that's what causes ice dams," says Dan Sowden, from Lockhart Roofing.

Workers use everything from shovels to chemicals, in an attempt to melt the unwanted ice dams and icicles along a roof's edge to prevent water from getting into your house.

"It could damage to the sheeting. It could cause interior damage, drywall damage, damage to the insulation. Yeah, you definitely don't want any water making its way back inside the home," Sowden said.

So, why do some homes have a lot, while others have little to none?

"Improper insulation. It could be heat loss. It could be improper soffet ventilation. It could be a lot of things," Sowden said.

The main thing is to keep an eye on your home to see where ice dams may form. You can also purchase melting products that are safe for shingles and roof rakes at hardware and home improvement stores, or seek out a reputable roofing company to come out and remove snow and ice from your roof.
