Boys now face charges for allegedly bringing toy gun to school

Posted: Updated:

(02/18/14) - The Genesee County prosecutor says it's a serious matter that's not being taken lightly.

Two boys now face charges for allegedly bringing a toy gun to Flint's Doyle-Ryder Elementary School earlier this month.

A petition has been filed in the juvenile court system to charge the two 11-year-old boys with disturbing the peace.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says one of the boys had a dispute with a teacher and thought he would teach the teacher a lesson.

Leyton says that boy convinced the other boy to bring a gun to school - adding the toy gun that ended up there didn't even work properly because it was missing a part.

Leyton says whether it's a real gun or a toy gun - this is still a serious matter.

"It's always your concern that a young person can get his hands on a real gun and bring it to school. There is no reason to bring a gun to school. Bringing a gun, even if it's a toy gun, to school causes all sorts of chaos and I think these youngsters need to be brought into the courthouse and we need to get their attention so that's what we're going to do," he said.

ABC12 News did try to reach out to the Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins to find out the student's status with the district while the charges move forward. So far we have not heard back.
