Homeowners get their sump pumps ready

BURTON (WJRT) -

(02/18/14) - The warmer weather that's expected this week has many homeowners preparing for the possibility of flooding.

They're trying to get their sump pumps ready just in case.

The operations manager at the Home Depot in Burton says the most common mistake that people make when it comes to their sump pumps is that they wait until the last minute to see if it's actually working.

With a winter warm-up around the corner, Chester Coburn has his sump pump ready to go.

With a thaw in the forecast, some are concerned that too much snow melting too fast could cause flooding, which Coburn says happens often in his Mount Morris Township neighborhood.

"It's a sewer system in the neighborhood all across Jennings Road and that area," he said.

The experts at Home Depot in Burton say homeowners should test out their sump pumps as soon as they can, including checking the float switch.

"There's been probably a lot of stagnant water sitting in there with the cold winter that we've had, so the water that is left in there. Lift up on that float switch and make sure that the pump does kick on. Even to do a quick test, if you want to drop a five gallon bucket of water in your basin to make sure that the water level will rise, that it will draw that water out, is a good test you can do as well," said Mike Thom, with The Home Depot.

By the time Brian Carpenter's phone rings, it's usually too late.

"I think it's certain that there's going to be a lot of people that have flooded basements this thaw. Sump pumps are going to be overflowing," he said.

The handy man will be ready to answer their call.

"I get a call and they say I need you now, my basement is flooded. I need a sump pump put in. That's usually when I get the call, not beforehand," Carpenter said.

Genesee County leaders are preparing for the thaw that's expected to take place and They want homeowners to be prepared as well.
