Flint Schools schedules paycheck pickup Friday

FLINT (WJRT) -

(02/19/14) - It's a first for Flint Community Schools - employees must pick up paper paychecks Friday.

"It's part of our internal auditing process," says Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins Jr. "(It's) something we haven't done before, but we feel the need is now."

Watkins says he'll be in line along with everyone else.

The district is still struggling with righting millions of dollars of debt.

Mandating employees pick up paper paychecks in person means an accurate count of people getting paid, not that the district expects to find discrepancies, but this ensures a good count.

This kind of count has been done in Detroit. Published reports online show a 2009 audit revealed more than 250 "ghost workers" in Detroit Public Schools.

"I don't feel there's anything fraudulent to be found, but you never know," says Ethel Johnson, president of the United Teachers of Flint. "We actually want an accurate count because we're in bargaining right now and the number of teachers we have is a little bit different from what the district has."

Flint Community Schools employees can pick up their checks at either Northwestern High School or at the district's administration building from 6:30 a.m.-noon or from 1-5:30 p.m.

Please bring government issued identification, such as a driver's license, with you. School identification will not be accepted.
