Gov. Snyder warning homeowners: prepare for possible flooding

Posted: Updated:

(02/19/14) - The wild weather heading our way could pack a punch.

In fact it could get so intense, Gov. Rick Snyder issued a warning Wednesday afternoon.

There's so much snow that when it melts, our drains might not be able to keep up.

Gov. Snyder is urging everyone to prepare their homes. Something as simple as clearing a drain can save your basement.

We caught up with a woman who says she's trying to prepare - but she can't find her drain.

"I was out here for two hours doing this," said Carolyn Kennedy, a Flint Township resident.

She says this area is prone to floods and if she can do something to prevent it, she'll do it.

"This whole area will become like a lake," she said.

The ground is frozen and rain is heading our way.

Gov. Snyder says that's a perfect storm for floods.

"Storm drains, eaves troughs, down spouts other things, you may want to be out there today to see if they're in a condition where they're actually transporting water," Gov. Snyder said.

He's also reminding everyone to steer clear of flooded roads.

Kennedy is hoping her curbside care taking does the trick for her neighborhood.

"Knowing me, I'll be out here again tomorrow," she said.

Gov. Snyder is also urging everyone to look out for your neighbors if they need help with any of this.

The DNR is working with the U.S. Coast Guard to clear out ice at the mouths of key rivers. That way, water will keep moving and hopefully minimize any flooding.
