FANG: Fentanyl tainted heroin seized in Genesee County

Posted: Updated:
GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(02/20/14) - Fentanyl-laced heroin is tied to dozens of deaths on the East Coast.

The Flint Area Narcotics Group, or FANG, says the dangerous drug combo has been seized in Genesee County.

FANG Section Commander Detective First Lieutenant Pat Richard says they believe the drugs came from the metro-Detroit area.

"We do have one person in custody, on that case, at this time," Richard said.

State and federal officials continue to investigate.  No charges have been issued.

Richard says this is the first time, at least recently, fentanyl-laced heroin has been positively confirmed in Genesee County.

Fentanyl is a powerful, even more potent than morphine, pain reliever.

State police lab results came back this week.

Richard wouldn't talk specifics about where or how the bust went down, but says the heroin seizure, sometime within the last two weeks, netted a large amount - roughly 25 grams.

Richard says the lab also confirmed three, separate samples of drugs tied to cases in Flint, Lapeer and Sanilac Counties tested purely positive for fentanyl.

"It's their understanding that they thought they were receiving heroin and what the people were receiving was in fact fentanyl," he says.

Earlier this month, Flint Police pointed to four deaths in the city, within days of each other, they suspected could be linked to fentanyl-laced heroin.

"We're still waiting for the lab results to come back, the toxicology screens, on the autopsies," says Flint Police Captain T.P. Johnson.

Richard says FANG's heroin seizures increased about 50 percent in 2013 compared to 2012.

"We do not negotiate pleas in heroin," says Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton. "If you're charged with a heroin crime, you're going to plead to that charge or go to trial. We're doing everything we can to alleviate the increased use of heroin."
