Genesee County Drain Commission prepares for thaw

FLINT (WJRT) -

(02/20/14) - The anticipation of a thaw means spring is edging nearer.

The Genesee County Drain Commission says to be careful what we wish for. If warmer weather comes too quickly, it can also bring big problems.

"A fast thaw will have more potential for flooding than a slow, nice little thaw. But there's no real way to predict whether a thaw event or rain event will result in a flooding event," said Sr. Drain Commissioner, Susanne Kubick.

If the mix of weather we're having happens to create a fast thaw, potential flooding also depends on the conditions in any given area.

"If there is going to be any flooding, it's probably going to be in the isolated, low-lying areas where the water can't get anywhere. Either because of frozen ground or obstructed catch basins," Kubick said.
