Man sentenced to life in prison for shooting death of 6 year old

(02/20/14) - A Saginaw County judge has decided the fate of Rico Saldana. He is one of three men convicted in the shooting that killed 6-year-old Layla Jones in Saginaw, in August of 2012.

Judge Darnell Jackson sentenced Saldana to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Saldana maintained his innocence, but on the advice of his attorney, made no comment during Thursday's sentencing.

The 22 year old was convicted of murder last month along with Michael Lawrence. Both were charged in the shooting that killed Layla. She was standing outside a home on Essling in Saginaw when she was struck by gunfire.
Saldana was driving the car where the gunshots came from. Lavonne Greer is already serving life in prison for his role in the crime. Michael Lawrence is awaiting sentencing for his role. A forth man has been charged as an accessory.

Saldana's attorney says the fight is not over. He plans to appeal his client's life sentence.
