Saginaw School Board votes to cut athletic funding for 2015-16 school year

Posted: Updated:

(02/20/14) - The Saginaw School Board has voted to eliminate funding to their athletic program.

It's just the latest move in tackling their multi-million dollar deficit.

This was a devastating blow to student athletes and parents.

The board just approved a deficit elimination plan that cuts funding to athletics for the 2015-16 school year and makes it a self-funded program.

This comes just days after the board turned in a deficit elimination plan to the state that includes closing five buildings - including Merrill Park and Houghton elementaries, as well as turning the two high schools into 8-12 grade buildings. There will also be layoffs and teachers are taking a wage cut.

This was all for the 2014-15 school year, but the state needed more details - they wanted a 2015-16 budget as well.

That's where these athletic cuts come in - but the superintendent is optimistic, he says this isn't the end of athletics, just a new way to fund them.

He says hopefully, these cuts will bring their budget back into the black.

This revised plan must be turned into the state by 5 p.m. Friday or they will lose out on millions of dollars in state aid - and face the threat of an emergency manager.
