Mt. Morris Township woman without water at home nearly two weeks

MT. MORRIS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(02/21/14) - Jenice Kneip says it started with a slow trickle the night of Sunday, Feb. 9. The next day? No water at all. Still none.

"I've been filling up 5-gallon buckets," she said. "I have three of them, right now, sitting in my bathtub. I have bottled water in the fridge. I have to go somewhere else to do my laundry. I have to go somewhere else to try and get ready for work."

Kneip says she's made a number of calls to the water department, Beecher Metropolitan District Water and Sewer, and doesn't know where to turn now. She's thought of different scenarios - a water main break nearby, debris in the line.

Both the water superintendent and foreman say they believe her private line is frozen. Crews have been out to check. It's her responsibility to fix it.

"Our water main is fine and that's where our responsibility stops," says Foreman Tyrone McCloud.

Kneip's home sits alone at a dead end near Harvard and Summit. In the 25 years she's lived there, she says she's never experienced a situation like this.

But, the weather has been unusual this winter.

"The frost is very deep this year," McCloud said. "Maybe her line isn't that deep. We don't know for sure. We just know it's not something we would deal with."

McCloud says they certainly are sympathetic, adding they offered her bottled water and also help when they have available resources.

"We'll try to figure out something for her, but we're ultimately not responsible for that private line," McCloud said.

Kneip isn't convinced the problem is on her end, but says she can't afford to call someone out to attempt to fix it.

"I'm going into my third week," she said. "I don't know how much longer I can deal with this."

McCloud says one other resident has had a similar issue recently.

"We assisted that resident, resolved that issue and hopefully we can do the same here," he says.
