GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - The Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids is establishing a research hub aimed at boosting work in the field of epigenetics.
The institute on Monday is announcing plans for the effort, which is led by its director of research and chief scientific officer Peter A. Jones. Epigenetics includes the study of the ways in which heritable traits are modified without a change to the DNA sequence.
The institute says epigenetics has the potential to boost cancer research and treatment. It plans to work with research partners around the world.
Established by Jay and Betty Van Andel in 1996, the Van Andel Institute is an independent research and educational organization. Its research arm is dedicated to studying genetic, cellular and molecular origins of cancer, Parkinson's and other diseases.
