Community continues to help paraplegic man whose wheelchair was stolen

GENESEE TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(02/25/14) - A Mid-Michigan community continues to rally behind a man who was robbed of his only form of transportation.

Tuesday morning, Thomas Beck thought he was going to lunch with a friend - but he got much more than that.

Beck, a paraplegic, had his wheelchair stolen earlier this month. He did get it back, but that's not all - good Samaritans donated a newer one and offered to build a ramp for his home, too.

Tuesday, the kindness continued.

On the way to lunch, he was surprised with a Saturn vehicle.

"I came into this, I can't thank everybody enough. This way too much," Beck said. "Without a car, pretty much my sister takes me everywhere, to the grocery store and everything, so this will be a great help."

Ron and Tim Blake, co- owners of Louis's Towing in Genesee Township, reached out after hearing about Tom's troubles. With the help of friends, they will make the car handicap accessible for him.

"I have a friend of mine that puts the hand controls in handicap cars and he's going to outfit it next week for us," Ron said.

"We're just very fortunate to be in the situation that we're in to help this young man," Tim said.

Another act of kindness that will give him a higher degree of independence.
