GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Police say a woman who reported finding an 8-week-old puppy in a trash can earlier this month in Grand Rapids actually had the dog for two or three weeks before taking it to an animal shelter.
The Grand Rapids Press reports (http://bit.ly/1frFAde ) police checked out the woman's story after getting tips that her report the dog was found Feb. 5 near a home when the temperature was in the teens wasn't accurate.
No charges are planned. Police say there was never any evidence the animal was abused.
The dog's story drew wide attention and prompted many applications to the Kent County Animal Shelter to adopt her. The puppy, believed to be a Chihuahua mix, had eye surgery because her eye was either injured or was affected by a birth defect.
