Our Home Transitional hopes to provide housing for female veterans

FLINT (WJRT) -

(02/26/14) - A plan to provide temporary housing for homeless female veterans in Genesee County is back on track. The organization known as Our Home Transitional hopes to buy a house in Flint to help women who have served their country.

Last year, Our Home Transitional was derailed by federal sequestration, but the situation has improved and there's a new fund raising effort underway.

A house in Flint could hold up to 25 women who have served in the military but are homeless or soon to be homeless. It's estimated there are 100 women in Genesee County alone who fit that profile.

"Those are female veterans about to be homeless or currently are homeless, with or without children," said Carrie Miller, Our Home Transitional founder.

Our Home Transitional is focusing on those without children because they feel they have been overlooked. Some are chronically unemployed or suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
Many also have health issues.

The website Endless Crowds has agreed to help Our Home Transitional raise $50,000 for the purchase of the house. That website seeks donations from the public. Grants from the federal government and other sources would be needed for other expenses. Single women would stay for six to 18 months while looking for work or getting an education.

The goal is to give them the tools they need to make it on their own.

"There's an action agreement plan that each client will sign, indicating this is how we're going to help you become self-sufficient, through mental and physical health care, job training and placement, education, parenting classes," Miller said.

The women, if they wanted to, could make knee braces for Saginaw-based In the Groove.

"Our clients will be able to work within the transitional home, earning a wage of their own, making those products," Miller said.
