(02/27/14) - Consider it nothing short of a tropical oasis in Mundy Township.
"We're thrilled to finally get this thing going. We're bringing a summertime feel into this cold winter we've been having," said John Lance, Flip Flops co-owner.
Flip Flops Grill n Chill opened for business early Thursday morning inside the what used to be Schapp's at Hill and Torrey Roads.
"Oh, man I came in through a blizzard, a white out, so this is great, very nice," said customer Connie Ranville.
The owners were looking for a design that would help make them stand out from the crowd.
"It was in the middle of the night while laying in bed, and I said I wanted to do something like you would find when you're on vacation," Lance said.
"I hope what we become is the tropical hot spot in the cold, cold environment here in Flint, Michigan," said Flip Flops co-owner Harry Brink.
The result, of nearly seven months of renovations - two warm weather destinations wrapped in one, complete with live, acoustic music on Friday's and Saturdays.
"We do have two bars," Lance said. "We have our coffee bar up here with our barista featuring all types of flavored coffees. Back here is the grown up bar. We don't have our liquor license yet. We hope to have it in the next seven to 10 days, but this is our Seaside Lounge, featuring 15 craft beers, and all kinds of tropical drinks."
As for the food - the menu features, among other things, a variety of vegetarian and gluten free dishes.
"We've got stuff that you might find in Florida, Key West, like our kabobs, our crabby patties," Lance said.
Flip Flops has already hired 35 people and is still looking for more.
"Yeah, absolutely. We're still taking applications, and they can come on in and apply any time we're open," Lance said.
