Graduation day for Genesee County's Veterans Court

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(02/27/14) - Two Flint area men, both Army veterans, are the first to complete Genesee County's Veterans Court.

Terrence Tevis and Shane Millay graduated the year-long, treatment program and walked out of the courtroom with their criminal charges, that landed them there, dismissed.

Genesee County Probate Court Judge Jennie Barkey says it's a program for veterans who, as a result of the service to their country, have suffered emotional problems that ended them up in the court system.

Veterans can be treated for drug and alcohol problems, receive counseling and must confront the underlying issues that got them in trouble, Barkey says.

"It was something I needed. We needed this," Tevis said. "For me, personally, the hardest part was just accepting the fact that I needed the help and to let them help me."

Family, friends, local law enforcement and program stakeholders were there cheering the men on and recognizing their efforts.

"Words alone can't say what I feel. I know they helped me out a lot," Millay said. "I'm planning on becoming a mentor after getting out of this program. (I'm) looking forward to doing that."

Barkey says the court was dedicated, when the program first started, to her former secretary's son - Wayne Cherry. Barkey says he served his country beautifully, but lost his battle with PTSD and took his own life.
