GM recall impacts nearly one and a half million cars

(02/28/14) - It's a big recall involving nearly one and a half million cars you see on the road every day.

General Motors is recalling the cars due to problems with an ignition switch.

It's a problem that is believed to be linked to at least 13 deaths.

There are several models impacted. GM will notify owners of the vehicles involved in that recall.

"I'm very sorry for those deaths and things that happened. Through the years, there's been all kind of different recalls," said Nancy French.

French drives a 2009 Chevrolet HHR. It's not included in the recall.

GM says the ignition on the vehicles recalled can accidentally switch out of the run position while the car is being driven. If that happens, the car's engine could shut off.

Mid-Michigan drivers say this makes them want to ask a lot of questions before buying a car.

"I'd be a little nervous about getting in a car. I'd want to get it checked out right away," said Michelle Dupuis.

Kyle O'Neil, the service manager at Garber Buick in Saginaw Township, says people who have questions about their cars should give local dealers a call.

Cars impacted by the latest GM recall are Cobalts, Pontiac G6, Saturn Ions, Chevrolet HHRs, Pontiac Solstices and Saturn Sky models.

"We'll check to see if your car has the recall. If you bought or serviced your car here with us, we'll have your vin number so we'll pull the vin number right in the computer so we'll know if that recall applies to your car or not," O'Neil said.

GM is asking drivers to avoid having anything other than car keys hanging from your key chain. They say that extra weight can cause the key to turn accidentally.
